Henry Bass Clifton, Jr. of Hoover, Alabama passed away on March 17, 2016 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Lula Maud Haigler Clifton; his parents Henry Bass Clifton, Sr. and Alma Hickman Clifton and his brother, James Thomas (J.T.) Clifton. Bass was born in Tarrant City, Alabama on March 14, 1920. He attended Jefferson County High School and was an outstanding football and baseball player. He received a baseball scholarship from The University of Alabama and played there until he signed a professional baseball contract to play for The New York Giants. He played several years with the Giant organization before being drafted into World War II. He received an honorable discharge from the Army Air Corp. He joined the Air National Guard and was called up in the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge from The Air Force. He went to work at ACIPCO and retired after 35 years. He played on many B.A.B.F. Acipco baseball teams in the industrial league. He was valve shop foreman at the time of his retirement. Bass was a longtime active member of American Legion Post 171 in East Lake and Tarrant Post 113. He was a member of The Huffman United Methodist Church. He is survived by two sons: Ron (Louise O'Barr Clifton) and Rick (Judy Martin); three grandsons: Rob (Davina Hutchins Clifton and daughter Heather), Ryan (Erina Tanaka Clifton) and Martin; one granddaughter, Audra; three great-grandsons: Taylor, Tanner and Ryo. He is also survived by a very special friend of over 20 years, Faye Stephenson. One would be hard pressed to find anyone that did not like Bass. He was a gentleman and will be missed by not only his family but those friends he met along life's journey. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 20, 2016 from 2 to 3 PM at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home. Graveside services to follow at 3 PM at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East.
