Harvey Douglas Payne

October 28, 1939 — April 13, 2025

Memorial Services for Mr. Harvey Douglas Payne, age 85 of Birmingham, will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at Church of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church with Pastor Stan Prewett officiating. A lunch to follow in the fellowship hall.

Mr. Payne passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at his home. A lifelong resident of Alabama, he joined the United States Army after high school where he honorably served for several years. He enlisted and processed into the Army with Elvis Presley in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, which he was very proud of, and spent over 30 months in Germany and Europe. Mr. Payne was a big history buff and focused most of his interest on World War II. He loved to play the harmonica, was an avid Alabama football and Atlanta Braves fan, and was proud to have taken The Dale Carnegie Course. Mr. Payne was a family man, and his life revolved around his children and grandchildren. Always putting others before himself and acting as selfless as he could. If he could help, he would do whatever he could to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. His values and actions to not act selfishly were reflected in his faith as well. A true man of God, he made sure to instill those same values and actions into his family. Mr. Payne was a member of Peaceful Valley Baptist Church, and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend that will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife of over 56 years, Elizabeth Payne, his sons, Joseph Douglas Payne (Melissa) and William Lewis Payne (Jessica), his grandchildren, McKinnley Douglas Payne, Ian Cullen Payne, Maura Kay Payne, Elias Benjamin Payne (Joe) and Alex Christian Payne (William), his great-grandchildren, Max Christian Payne and Jaxon Tyler Payne (Alex), his sisters, Sarah Payne Reedy and Carolyn Payne Duke (Wayne) and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Franklin Payne, Sr. and Ellen Gaynell Knox Payne, and his siblings, Robert Franklin Payne, Jr., Evelyn Ruth Payne, William Lee Payne, Clifford Hardy Payne, James E. Payne, Nellie Jane Payne, Doris Jean Payne, John Donald Payne and Wendell V. Payne.
