Harold Mayo

d. September 11, 2015

Harold Travis Mayo had three great priorities in life: God, family and work. At 85 years of age he finally quit working, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, having loved his family so well. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janet Fladebo Mayo, who was the love of his life. Harold was raised in Ardmore, Oklahoma by Nathan and Clara Mayo. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He returned home to simultaneously work multiple jobs, graduate from the University of Oklahoma, and help raise a family. Through his incredible work ethic and business acumen he created a company, Mayo Management, that spread throughout the southeast. But his business drive and success never took priority over his family. He loved to spend time with family whether it was skiing out west, fishing local lakes, playing golf or simply playing cards in the den. Coaching his children and watching his grandchildren play sports, made him well known throughout the Mountain Brook, Vestavia and Oak Mountain sports programs. He loved his family and his family loved him. He also loved his church. He was an active member of McElwain Baptist Church and its many members were an integral part of his life. Through McElwain, he served his God, and taught his children and grandchildren to love his Lord. He leaves behind a godly legacy through his beloved children, Gregg (Helen) Mayo, Gary (Jama) Mayo and Michelle (David) McKnight; his most beloved grandchildren Kyle (Jenna) Mayo, Kurt Mayo, Trent (Ashley) McKnight, Drew McKnight and Scott McKnight and his newest love, his great grandson Hudson Travis Mayo.

He is survived by his loving sister Frankie Pontious who came from Oklahoma to be with him this week. He was predeceased by his sister Polly (Raymond) Culp, Jean (Winnie) Jordan and brother Warren (Jessie Lee) Mayo. He is forever loved by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. We will all truly miss him but will hold him in our hearts forever.

A memorial service will be held at McElwain Baptist Church on Monday, September 14th at 1:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to McElwain Baptist Church, 4445 Montevallo Road, Birmingham, AL 35213 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
