Gloria Melendez Franklin, age 74, passed away peacefully on April 8th at UAB St. Vincent’s East. Born to Felix and Josephine Melendez, Gloria grew up in Roebuck Garden. She is survived by her siblings Felix Melendez Jr. and Bonnie Arnold, her devoted husband Tim Franklin, and her sons Jondavid and Zachary Franklin. She was a proud grandmother, known as “Grammy”—to her beloved grandson, Xander. This past February, Gloria and Tim celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary—a testament to their lifetime of love, faith, and partnership. Gloria was a ray of light to all who knew her, known for her uplifting spirit and endless compassion. Her voice was a gift she shared freely, singing in church choirs across the South with her husband often by her side as choir director. Together, they brought music, worship, and joy to countless congregations. Above all, Gloria was the most caring mother—steadfast, nurturing, and always there for her children. Her love was constant and unconditional, and her presence brought comfort and strength through every season of life. She carried dreams of traveling the world and writing a children’s book, and those who love her believe in her eternal peace; she is now free to follow every passion her heart ever held. Her legacy lives on in the music she made, the faith she shared, and the love she gave without limit. She belongs in our hearts, where she will always remain. Services will be held on Monday, April 14th, at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., with a service to follow from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
