WHITING, GLADYS I., Age 93, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2012. Until the last few weeks of her life, Gladys enjoyed living independently at her Roebuck residence where she resided for the last 47 years. Even to the end, she enjoyed her family and friends, attending church, and going every Friday to the hairdresser. A native of Albertville, Alabama, Gladys and her late husband, Elmo, moved to Birmingham during the depression years of the 1930's. She was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church and a retired nurse from the Baptist Medical Center-Montclair. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Morgan, her husband of 65 years, Elmo T. Whiting, and their daughter, Irene Hughes Chapman. She is survived by one son and daughter in love, Felton and Sharon Whiting, one daughter and son in love, Shelia and John Corns, 5 Grandchildren and their spouses: Kim and Bill Long, Neal and Mary Hughes, Tim and Anna Whiting, Tom and Trudy Whiting, Chuck and Marci Corns. In addition, Gladys is survived by 8 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and a number of extended family members. Visitation for Mrs. Whiting will be held beginning at Noon, Monday May 21, at Jefferson Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, located at 1591 Gadsden Hwy in Birmingham (205-322-0543). The memorial service will take place at the Jefferson Memorial Gardens Chapel at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Mark Smith and Rev. Neal Hughes presiding. Interment will follow at the Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Whiting's Sunday School Class at Eastside Baptist Church will be seated during the worship service as honorary pall bearers.
