George Walter Latham of Birmingham passed away Saturday, April 10 at home surrounded by his family. He was 92 years of age. George was born on December 23, 1928, to Georgia Mae Houlditch Latham and Chester Arlie Latham in Kansas, Alabama. He is preceded in death by his wife, La Rue Ramey Latham; his parents; and his brothers, Gerald Ray Latham and Don Edward Latham. He grew up in Carbon Hill, Alabama, and graduated from Carbon Hill High School in 1947. Upon attending Florence State Teachers College, he met and married his wife of 62 years, La Rue Ramey Latham. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Accounting. After completing 7 years of service in the United States Air Force, he and La Rue settled in Birmingham where they lived for 58 years. They had two daughters, Katrina and Rosamond. George worked at Ketona Chemical Corporation (Tarrant City, AL); Hercules, Inc. (Wilmington, DE); and Hystron Fibers (Spartanburg, SC). He worked for Southern Natural Gas Company (Birmingham, AL) for 15 years before retiring in 1985. He enjoyed reading, music, and travel - particularly in the western United States. He was happiest spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, Kirsten and Daniel. He was a member of the Church of Christ, most recently at Riverchase Church of Christ in Hoover. George is survived by his daughters Katrina Tuggle (Mark) and Rosamond Latham, grandchildren Kirsten Tuggle and Daniel Tuggle, and many dear relatives and friends. His funeral will be held the 15th day of April at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens in Trussville. Visitation will be at 11am followed by graveside service at 12pm with Jefferson Memorial directing.
