On March 25, 2020, Fred Dewit Schmitt went home to spend eternity with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Fred worked as a Milkman for White Dairy and owned Phillips 66 and Fred's Chevron in Tarrant, AL from which he retired in 1995. He loved all sports, but had a special affinity for baseball. He earned a baseball scholarship to Mississippi State University but chose to accept an offer to play professional baseball with the Detroit Tigers organization. He married his high school sweetheart , Bunnie Jane Curlette, at home plate before one of his games in Griffin, GA in 1950. Together, they built a life and a loving family that includes their children, Steven (Kathi), John (Renee), Shari (Van), Joe (Betsy), and Jane. Fred also leaves behind his precious grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he adored.
Fred will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his generous nature and his love for his family. He loved and was loved greatly and will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be on Monday, March 30, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will immediately follow. Due to the current COVID-19 Virus threat, proper restrictions regarding numbers of people visiting at a time and spacing guidelines will be followed. When life is back to normal and baseball resumes, the family will plan a Celebration of Life Memorial.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the First Baptist Church of Roebuck Plaza in Fred's memory or to your favorite charity.
