Lindsay, Evelyn Murphree Smith, age 97, of South Roebuck passed away on Friday, September 25, 2015. Mrs. Lindsay was the widow of Jerome H. Lindsay. She was the oldest daughter of the late James E. and Lottie Browning Murphree. Mrs. Lindsay received an under graduate degree from Howard College (now Samford) and a master's degree from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. A lifelong teacher, she taught in both elementary and high schools. Late in her career she worked as a programs specialist for the Birmingham School System. Mrs. Lindsay was a lifelong member of the East Lake United Methodist Church. She served over 25 years as a Sunday school teacher in the primary department. She served as president of the church's Women's Society. She was a member of the Randolph Sunday School Class having served one year as its president. She was also director of the Senior Citizen program. When the church celebrated its 100th year anniversary, Mrs. Lindsay served as chairman for the yearlong celebration of this event. Mrs. Lindsay was a member of various organizations including Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Epsilon, NEA, and AEA. She was a member of the Phi Mu Fraternity and The Club. Her successful career in education was recognized by Woodlawn High School inducting her into their Hall of Fame in 1983. Mrs. Lindsay is survived by her two sisters, Lois M. Lee (Chattanooga), Jimsy M. Hanket (McLean, Va); her son, James M. Smith (Carole); step-daughter, Linda Lebo (Atlanta); step-son, Allyn Lindsay (Teresa) (Quinton, AL). Her grandchildren are Mack Smith (Attalla), Richard and David Lebo (Lori) (Atlanta), T.J. and Stephanie Lindsay (Sipsey). Her great grandson is Joseph Smith (Findlay, OH). Her nephew is Arthur Hanket (Stephanie); great-niece, Zoe (Burbank, CA); niece Susan Brandt (Sam) (Parker, Co); great nieces Laura (McLean, Va.) and Christie (San Francisco, CA). The family would like to thank her many dedicated caregivers. Especially; Chantara Robinson, Shirley Black, Veronica Jordan, Willowdean Shine, Benita Thomas, and Shelia Attical. A special thanks to all at "Always There" In-Home Care, Birmingham, Home Care Services and New Beacon Hospice for all their love and support. Visitation will be 1:00pm until 2:00pm on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home. A service will be held at 2:00pm followed by an entombment at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East. Rev. Sally Allocca will officiate. Memorial may be made to the East Lake United Methodist Church.
