Elmina "Mina" Elizabeth Peterson Brown, 95, of Hoover, passed away on July 18, 2009. Mina was a 1938 graduate of Birmingham Southern College and taught "auditorium" and was the sponsor of the Debate Team at Barrett Elementary School from 1943 - 1954. She was a devoted and lifelong active member of the Methodist Church, having accepted Christ and the church at the age of 12 at McCoy Methodist Church. Mina and her husband, through the almost 50 years of their marriage, enjoyed their home on the lake, boating, spending time with family and friends, and traveling. In the last two years of her life she delighted in trips to the zoo, nail salon, and ice cream parlor with her great niece Holly Mussell (Mark) and their children Eric, Lauren and Kathryn.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Barney Ralph Brown, their beloved dog Mac; her parents John Spencer Peterson and Minnie Hubbard Peterson, sister Lottie McKee of New Orleans, LA, brothers Spencer, Wyatt and Richard Peterson of Birmingham. Survivors include her sister-in-law Evelyn Peterson, her nieces Anne Peterson Green (Ralph), Rosalyn Horton and Gloria Horton (T.J.); nephews, John Peterson (Frances), Wyatt Peterson (Patricia) and Kenneth Ray Peterson; stepson Rev. Buddie R. Brown and his children Buzz Brown (Sheree), Kisti Carter (Jeff) and Wendi Henry (Ed); three granddaughters Katie and Mollie Henry and Jordan Carter; one grandson, Jake Carter, her numerous great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. "WE LOVE YOU TO PIECES!"
The family is especially grateful for the friendship and concern shown Mina and Barney through the years by the members and clergy of Spindale United Methodist Church and special friends Wilbur and Joanne Epley of Forest City, North Carolina. We would also like to thank the staffs of St. Vincent's East, Fairhaven Retirement Center and the Hospice team of Odyssey Heathcare for their many acts of kindness.
Visitation will be held on July 21 beginning at 2:00 PM at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home with Graveside services at 3:00 PM in Jefferson Memorial Gardens East with Rev. Buddie R. Brown and Rev. Eugene Stockstill officiating. Jefferson Memorial Trussville directing.
