Edith Smith Gilchrist, 98, departed this life peacefully at home September 19, 2009. Born September 8, 1911 in St. Clair County, to Chris Clinton and Annie McKinney Smith. She grew up in Friendship, lived in Springville and Ashville before moving to Birmingham. She was a member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church and worked in sales at Loveman's Dept. Store and retired from Singer Sewing Co. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Tom Ben, 3 brothers, Gus, Jack and Letaw, sister Ila Whitley and son Benny Gilchrist, Sr. Left to cherish her memory are daughter Gussie Oliver (Robert), son Martin Gilchrist (Florine), six grandchildren, Linda Vaughan, Benny Gilchrist Jr., Debra Garrison, Patricia Hunter (Victor), Fred Gilchrist (June), David Gilchrist (Kelly), six great grandchildren Stacy , Leslie, Devon, McKenzie, Kaitlynn, Matthew and one great-great grandson Caleb. Graveside services will be on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 1pm with burial in Jefferson Memorial Gardens East. Visitation will be from noon until 1pm Tuesday. Pallbearers will be Benny Jr., Fred and David Gilchrist, Victor Hunter, Ronald Harris, and Ray Rogers.
