Edgar Moyer

d. March 17, 2015

Edgar B. Moyer, Jr., born June 19, 1940 to Zara Fuller and Edgar B. Moyer in East Orange, NJ. Along with three siblings, the family moved south to Florida in 1962. Ed was married to Carol in 1968 and they eventually found their home in Alabama in 1975. He worked for American Hoechst selling equipment and supplies for printing presses. After 25 years of service, he retired and later opened his own business. He was involved in many activities during his lifetime. He coached youth soccer teams at the Northeast YMCA when soccer was just being introduced to Birmingham. He taught sportsmanship as the most important lesson in sports and showed youth how to have fun with recreational soccer. He also refereed youth soccer for ten years and played on a men's league in Birmingham. In 1984, Ed was involved in a house fire and suffered burns to 80% of his body. He spent six months in UAB's burn ward where he met Dr. Alan Dimick and later formed BURNS, a support group for other burn survivors. Ed never considered himself a burn victim - always a burn survivor! Although his work with the BURNS organization changed the lives of many burn survivors, Ed was compelled to give back for all the assistance and encouragement he received during his recovery. In 2000, he joined the Center Point Fire Department as a Volunteer and operated a Rehab Unit that provides on scene support to firefighters. He was chosen as the first Chief of the Volunteers for the Center Point Fire Department. Because of his work with BURNS and the Center Point Fire Department, he was awarded the Wells Fargo Second Half Champions Award, which recognizes significant accomplishments of individuals over the age of fifty. Ed was an avid motorsports fan and loved auto racing of any kind. He was well known at many of the local race tracks and raced his own drag car for several years. He collected model trains, loved music and never turned away a stray animal. Most importantly, he was willing to lend a hand to a friend or help out when needed. He is a 32nd Degree Mason associated with the Georgianna Davis lodge in Trussville, Alabama. Ed is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carol, a daughter Beth (Scott) of Washington DC, a son Ted (Theresa) of Hoover, Alabama. Five grandchildren Natalie, Kyra, Grayson, Scott and Andrew, and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Esther Chase and Heather Moyer and son Edward Scott Moyer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday March 21, at 6pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home with visitation from 4pm until 6pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Center Point Fire Department Volunteer Program 2229 Center Point Parkway, Birmingham, AL 35215. Jefferson Memorial Trussville directing.
