Wishing on the Wind
How quietly the wind arose,
Tremulent as a sigh.
It soft-shoed through silent hollows,
Past dozing butterfly.
Whistled at the startled swallow
And toe-danced down the street.
Rapped softly at every window
With sort of rythmic beat.
"I wish I were the wind" I said,
I'd court the winnowed stars
And when the sun hangs hot and red
I'd fan the fainted flow'rs,
And you would never be lonesome,
My love, my heart's delight.
I would come to you as dreams come
Unbidden in the night.
