Doris was born on June 24, 1937 in Bessemer, Alabama during the depression era. Her mother, Ruby Horton, worked hard to provide for her young family of Doris and her four siblings. They didn't have much but starting with a life of frugality gave Doris the incentive and will to be creative and persevere throughout her entire lifetime. Being the elder sister to younger brothers who were constantly on the prowl for mischief, she grew up scrappy and always out to defend the boys only to find out later that they had been the ones to start the mischief. Doris garnered quite the reputation so that most of the neighborhood crowd knew not to mess with the Horton boys because the Horton sister was very capable of coming to their rescue. Her childhood made her strong and self confident, traits she made sure to pass on to her own children and grandchildren. Her mother instilled the love of God in her family and Doris attended St. Aloysius Catholic Elementary and John Carroll High School. Doris was given a mother of pearl Miraculous Medal during her freshman year which she wore every day until the day of her death. It was this same Medal that attracted Jimmy Gregg to her while they both worked at the local A&P grocery store (besides the fact that she was the prettiest girl he had ever met). They dated throughout high school and married on August 17, 1957. Doris work and lived frugally once more to help put Jimmy through Howard Pharmacy School (now Samford). She created and sewed her own beautiful clothes and she could always make something out of nothing. She and Jimmy raised three children, Donna, Wally and Richard. Doris worked nights as IBM programmer while Jimmy worked days at P&S Apothecary. During the day she was always sewing children's clothes and keeping house, and as the children got older she volunteered at their school, coaching volleyball, softball and baseball teams. She continued to work at various secretarial jobs and in her "spare time" she became a Master Gardener. She loved gardening and her yards always looked like a botanical garden. She constantly turned bits of scrap she picked up at torn down houses into beautiful flower garden accents like walls and fountains. She was a natural artist with so much creativity. She took so much joy and satisfaction getting up every morning with a plan of action for every day. She most enjoyed spending time with her ever growing family. Doris and Jimmy retired to Cropwell to live on Logan Martin Lake. They became highly involved at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and enjoyed RV camping with their dogs. Doris was also editor of their neighborhood newspaper and coordinated their neighborhood garden club. Doris and Jimmy were married for 55 years before his passing in 2013. In lieu of flowers to Ann's New Life Center; 3440 Martin St. South, Cropwell (Pell City), AL 35054. (205) 338-4580.
