Dixie Lee McGill McCormick, 61, a loving wife, sister, and friend, went to her heavenly home on February 15, 2024. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Dixie was born on January 29, 1963 to John and Margaret McGill. Dixie graduated from John Carroll Catholic High School in 1981 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in secondary education. Dixie taught high school Honors English, government and history for several years at Huffman High School, and as an extension of her high school cheerleading days, she served as the sponsor of the cheerleading squad. Dixie married the love of her life, James Edward McCormick, in 1994.
Dixie experienced multiple health challenges throughout her life, and faced each one with grace and tenacity. Later in life Dixie continued her education, earning a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree in 2015. Dixie loved being a nurse and enjoyed the time she worked at University Hospital in Birmingham. Dixie loved all types of animals, and in particular she loved caring for and rehabilitating injured animals. In addition to her beloved dogs and cats, she also counted opossums and sloths among her favorites.
Dixie is preceded in death by her parents, John and Margaret McGill, nephew, Conner, and her loving husband, James McCormick. Dixie leaves behind to celebrate her life, her sister, Kelly McGill of Vestavia, multiple cousins and in-law family members, and numerous friends.
Visitation for Mrs. Dixie McCormick will be Saturday, February 24, 2024 from 12:00 - 2:00 PM and a Celebration of Life will follow at 2:00 PM at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens. Dixie will be laid to rest beside her beloved James.
Memorial donations can be made in Dixie's name to the Alabama Kidney Foundation or the Shelby County Humane Society.
