Mr. David Alvin Portwood of Birmingham passed away November 9, 2012 after a valiant fight with cancer. He was 79 years old. A native of Knoxville, TN, Mr. Portwood was owner of BESCO, a member of Huffman United Methodist Church, and was a Mason. During the Korean Conflict, he served his country in the Navy on the island of Okinawa. He loved technology, gardening, and traveling the country with his wife and church friends. He will be especially missed by his beloved Yorkie, Kippie. Mr. Portwood was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Barbara Portwood and his brother, Eugene Portwood. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 56 years, Sue Portwood. He is also survived by his daughters, Barbara "Babs" Scruggs (Bill) and Judy Long (Bradley); grandchildren, Bonnie Hendrix (Tom), David Long (Mary) and Mark Long, as well as a great grandson, Thomas William Hendrix. Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville on Sunday, November 11, 2012. Funeral service will be held Monday, November 12th in the chapel at 10 am with Dr. Harris N. Hand officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens East.
