Mr. David Joel Falkner, loving husband and faithful father, passed away suddenly due to an aneurysm on Thursday, November 10, 2011 in Atlanta, GA. David was born in Birmingham, AL on July 27, 1927 to the late Earnest Falkner and Frankie Rawlins-Falkner of Birmingham. The third-born of four siblings, David lived most of his young life in Birmingham until he joined the Navy in 1944 and served in the Asian Theatre until 1945. He served in the Naval Reserve for six years. After the war he trained as a pilot and flying became his passion. David served a brief stint in commercial flight, but the majority of his career was in government service through the Federal Aviation Administration. David served 36 years with FAA through GADO in areas of air traffic control and development of flight standards. FAA service took him to Birmingham, Jackson, MS and Atlanta, and back to Birmingham where he retired in 1986. David was blessed with two fulfilling marriages. After the death of his first wife, Meryle June Washington in 1989, he was joyfully wed to Arlette Thomas Posey of Douglasville, GA. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Arlette Falkner, and six children, Richard Murray (Bonnie) of Warrior, AL; Janice Grant (Richard) of Birmingham, AL; LaJuana Jean Fiester (Bill) of Hiram, GA; Cindy Wiles (Dennis) of Arlington, TX; Scott Posey of Marietta, GA; and Justin Posey (Nina) of Atlanta. David has been blessed with 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Earnest (Pete) Falkner of Columbiana, AL; and two sisters, Marie Owen and Ellen Falkner of Birmingham. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, November 13, 2011 from 2 - 4 PM and a memorial service will follow at 4:00 PM in the Rosehaven Chapel with Pastor Charles Gibbs officiating. Mr. Falkner will be transported to Alabama and the family will receive friends at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Birmingham, AL, on Monday, November 14, 2011 from 5 - 8 PM. The funeral service will be Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville, AL.
