Darlene Hastie Green

April 24, 1952 — March 6, 2025

Darlene Hastie Green passed peacefully from earth on March 6, 2025 at the age of 72.

She died at home surrounded by family. Darlene impacted many lives and will be missed dearly by all those who knew her. She was born in Mobile, Alabama and grew up attending Dauphin Way Baptist Church. She graduated from Murphy High School in 1970. She then moved to Birmingham and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB). She later went on to earn a Doctorate in Nursing as well. She worked as a nurse at UAB hospital and as a Nursing Instructor at Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing at Samford University. Darlene eventually left teaching to become Assistant and then Director of the Office of Data Resources for the UAB Medical System. She was an active member and deacon of Southside Baptist Church, drawn there by their open, non-discriminatory tenets. They routinely ministered to the homeless and she helped run the church’s food bank. She was a kind, loving woman who had an equal affinity for humans and dogs. Her favorite dog was her cherished dachshund, Zelda and Snoopy from the Peanuts cartoons. She made scrapbooks of Peanuts cartoons and mailed cut-outs from the newspaper to her children into their adulthoods.

Darlene’s family was her treasure here on earth. She is survived by her husband Earl Wayne Green and their children: Angela Renfroe Rotter (Brock), Kristina Rae Brown (Frank Delano, Jr), and Dr. Eric Brent Green (Dr. Shari Fetterman). She leaves behind seven beloved grandchildren: four granddaughters — Abigail Rae Green, Margaret Rae Brown, Lyla Evelyn Rotter and Willow Anita Rotter — and three grandsons — Jacob Lawrence Green, Vincent Jackson Green, and Elijah James Brown. She is survived by her sister Linda Hastie Garver (Dr. Michael Clay) and two nieces — Mary Michael Garver Kelley and Mallory Garver Carson (Joshua Adam) — and a nephew, Myles Clayton Garver. She also leaves behind three grandnephews — Thomas Henry Kelley, Jacob Webster Carson, and Charles Michael Carson. She is survived by eight first cousins. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents James and Evelyn Hastie and her baby sister Annette Hastie.
