Constance Patterson Gilmer

Constance "Connie" Patterson Gilmer passed away on January 6, 2024, at the age of 76, in Gulf Shores, Alabama. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Connie was a beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. 

Connie had a vibrant personality and was well known for her fun-loving and witty sense of humor. She had an authentic love for her family. Her warm and loving nature touched the lives of all those around her.

Connie is survived by Richard Gilmer, her husband of 60 years, her daughter Leslie Gilmer Whitcomb (John), her son Grant Gilmer, her brother Tommy Patterson (Jennie), and her grandchildren Caroline Whitcomb, Catherine Whitcomb, Hollis Gilmer, Smith Gilmer, Wyatt Gilmer, two nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Pat and Gloria Patterson.

In her educational journey, Connie graduated from West End High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and cheered on the Lions as a cheerleader. She furthered her education with collegiate studies at UAB.

Professionally, Connie worked in accounting for multiple CPA firms over the years, showcasing her talent for mathematics and dedication to helping others.

Connie found solace in her faith and was an active member of various churches throughout her life, including West End Baptist Church, Westwood Baptist Church, Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Brookwood Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Gulf Shores.

Outside of church and family, Connie had a variety of hobbies that brought her joy. In her youth, she had been an outstanding swimmer who competed at the highest levels. Later in life, she loved the beach, swimming, water sports, tennis, cooking, and attending many athletic events, especially those at Auburn University.

A memorial service to honor Connie's life will be held at 1:00pm Wednesday, January 10th at Church of the Highlands Grants Mill Chapel, 4700 Highlands Way, Birmingham, Alabama 35210.

The Graveside service will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, 1591 Gadsden Highway Birmingham, Alabama 35235.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Alabama Baptist Children's Home, a cause that was close to Connie's heart.

Connie will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will forever be cherished in our hearts.
