Coleen Powell Mitchell went to be with her Lord on July 2nd at the age of 89. She was born to Carney Rice Powell and Aileen Helton Powell on March 8, 1927 in Birmingham, AL at Hillman Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Herbert Mitchell, her parents and 2 sisters: Gloria Swatzell and Yvonne Wilson. She is survived by 2 children: Grant (Lindall) Mitchell and Rhonda Leigh Mitchell. She also leaves behind 2 grandchildren: Roddy (Kelli) Mitchell and Ricky (Amy) Mitchell and, 5 great grandchildren: Hunter Mitchell, Hannah Mitchell, Austin Mitchell, Morgan Mitchell and Toby Blackwood. Also surviving her are 3 sisters: Juanita Price, Shirley Longmire and Carney Thomas and numerous nieces and nephews. She grew up in East Lake and attended Woodlawn High School. She went to work at the age of 15 at Loveman's Department Store where she met the man she would marry. They were married on her 16th birthday in 1943 and, at the time of his death, they had been married 58 years. She later worked at Jack Cole Trucking, Liberty National Life Insurance, Sears, Vulcan Life and Motion Industries. At the time of her passing she lived in Palmerdale having relocated from Roebuck Plaza prior to Charles' death. While in Roebuck Plaza they attended Eastside Baptist Church. She and Charles were charter members of Agape Baptist Church in Pinson where she attended until her health failed. She enjoyed monthly meetings of the Young at Heart that meets at the Walker Building in Palmerdale where she was responsible for handing out door prizes. She also enjoyed her weekly quilting sessions at the Palmerdale Homesteads Community Center and going to garage sales with her daughter-in-law. At the time of her passing she was residing at TLC Nursing Home in Oneonta. The family wants to express their gratitude to the home for her care. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to 2 nurses in particular (Leslie Jones & Ashley McDowell) for the special attention and love they showed to her. The family will receive visitors at Jefferson Memorial in Trussville on Wednesday July 6th at 9AM with funeral services to follow at 10AM with burial at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East. Services will be officiated by Bro. Herman Pair, Jefferson Memorial Trussville directing.
