Clifford W. Markley passed away May 30th at Golden LivingCenter - Trussville at age 84. Mr. Markley grew up in Augusta, Kansas and graduated from Kansas State University. After serving in the military, he worked in management for K-mart Corporation for over 35 years. He opened and managed many stores in different states, leading him to Birmingham where he managed the store in the Roebuck shopping center for 18 years until his retirement.
Mr. Markley was a member of First Baptist Church Trussville and had previously been a deacon and Sunday school teacher at both South Roebuck and Huffman Baptist. He was very civic-minded and was a longtime member of the Birmingham East Rotary Club where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow.
Cliff loved to travel and toured all fifty states twice in addition to several foreign countries, including a favorite trip to the Holy Land in 1996. His hobbies included collecting Indian artifacts and framing them with paintings which he sold at arts and craft shows at the Civic Center and in neighboring states.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Ray and Harriet; two brothers, Dwight and Kenneth; and his wife of 35 years, Barbara Proctor Markley. Surviving him are his brother Lyle (Beth), his daughter Lori (Seth), his son David, and nine grandchildren: Simeon (Annie), Abby (Carlos), Nathan, Emily, Micah, Amanda, Carolyn, Rebekah, and Anna Joy. He is also survived by his special friend, Louise Cowan, who was a steadfast companion and care-coordinator for the last 18 years.
The Funeral service will be held at 2:00PM on Sunday, June 1 at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home & Gardens, 1591 Gadsden Highway, Birmingham, AL with Rev. Bobby Erwin presiding.
