Clayton L. Payne

Clayton L. Payne passed away on Tuesday, April 15th. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lexie and Floyd McLaughlin; brothers, Charles and Gene Payne. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Willodean Payne and daughter, Donna Hamrick (David); siblings include Floyden McCain, Judie Devine and Sherman Payne (Leola). Clayton worked for US Steel for 40 years, later to join Equifax. He and his wife were residents in Forestdale for 40 years before moving to Hoover. Clayton was an active member of the Hoover Senior Center. C.L. attended Birmingham Southern College and continued his education into his senior years. He was involved in numerous service organizations including the Metro West Masonic Lodge #927 and the Boy Scouts, upon which he received the Silver Beaver Award. He loved the outdoors, exercised daily, was an avid sportsman, Ham radio operator, member of the swim aerobics group, and neighborhood volunteer. Clayton never met a stranger and will be remembered for his wit and ability to tell a great story. C.L. was also well known for his annual "Santa" calls to children every Christmas Eve. He was gracious and caring: a devoted husband and father. He and Willodean shared so many wonderful moments, travels, were truly each other's best friend. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 19th, at Jefferson Memorial in Trussville from 11am until 12pm, with service immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Clayton's memory to The Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
