Lela Christine Abel Adkins, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, passed into the presence of the Lord on June 17, 2020 at the age of 94. She is preceded in death by parents Arthur Leroy Abel and Laura Bernettie Fowler Abel, brother Jesse Joe Abel, her beloved husband Clarence William Adkins, and her two sons, John Robert Adkins and David William Adkins. She is survived by three children, Lee D. (Lois) Adkins, Linda Adkins Greer, and Sue Adkins (David) York, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Christine and her husband, Clarence, were married in 1943, just a few months before he left to serve our country in World War II. Upon his return, they began their life together and were married until his death in 1990.
In addition to being a busy and nurturing mother to her five children and an excellent homemaker, Christine was also the bookkeeper for the family business. Christine rarely had time to herself, but when she did, she could be found reading a good book or playing her favorite hymns on the piano. Christine was a committed Christian and loved to express her faith through playing and singing her favorite hymns. In later years, the delight of her life was her grandchildren.
Christine will always be remembered for her pleasant demeanor and the way she loved and served her family so selflessly. Throughout her life, Christine was an example to others as she displayed joy regardless of life’s circumstances and faced life’s challenges with courage and perseverance.
Our Mother and Nana will forever be loved.
