Charles Gilbert

Charles Elliott Gilbert, age 88, of Hoover, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. Mr. Gilbert graduated from Auburn University in 1951, and married Betty Bailes Gilbert, his wife of 66 years. Mr. Gilbert accepted his ROTC commission through Auburn University and entered the United States Air Force, forgoing a career in professional baseball. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include sister-in law Peggy B. West (Clyde Wade West, deceased); nephews Robert West and Jay West (Kari West); niece Ginger Mize (Paul Mize); and great nieces and nephews Kristin West, Hallie Mize, James West and David West. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Mr. Gilbert's church, North Shelby Baptist Church. Visitation will be at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM with graveside service at 3:00 PM on Saturday, February 24, 2018. Reverend Allen Murphy will be officiating.
