Beverly Helm Harris of Irondale died Wednesday, November 15, 2023. She was 75
years old.
Ms. Harris was a resident of Irondale but had spent most of her life in Birmingham.
She was born on January 17, 1948, in Birmingham, AL. She married her high school
sweetheart, James Edward Harris, on August 3, 1968. They were married for 48
years when Jim passed away in October 2015.
She was preceded in death by her husband, by her parents, Waverly Bernard Helm
and Margaret Louise Helm, and her sister Deborah Wilson, all of Birmingham.
Ms. Harris is survived by two children, daughter Summer Harris Hancock of
Brentwood, Tennessee and son Joseph Nathaniel Harris of Irondale; two brothers
Waverly Helm (Cindy) of Springville and Kevin Helm of Birmingham; and two
grandchildren, Charles Hunter Hancock and Andrew James Hancock, both of
Brentwood.
She worked at the Len Lowe Co., Ltd. in Birmingham for many years as a secretary.
For the past 30 years she worked two months of the year playing a vital part of
helping the office of Christmas Village Festival and Cottontails Festival run smoothly.
Working there with those ladies was her "happy place".
But it was her "job," first as a Mom and in later years as "Granny B" to the
grandsons, that she was most proud of. She was also a loving caregiver to "rescue"
pups "Redd," "Missy" and "Jackson."
Ms. Harris graduated in 1966 from Shades Valley High School; afterward, she
attended Birmingham-Southern College.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 21 at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in
Trussville, with visitation from 1:00-2:00 p.m. A brief service will be held at 2:00
p.m., with burial to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.
