Mrs. Betty J. Jensen, age 85, of Birmingham died Thursday, April 17, 2014. Betty was the first female Police Officer hired by the City of Birmingham and achieved the rank of Sargent and loved her job, serving the people of Birmingham. During her career with the police department Betty was instrumental in establishing a chapel at The Birmingham Airport for the grieving families of the Vietnam Veterans who died serving our country. She was a member of Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church where she had held many leadership positions throughout the years. Betty loved her family, friends, fishing, eating catfish and hushpuppies. Betty loved her travels in the car across the United States, Middle East, Mexico and Israel. She was preceded in death by the love of her life of 58 years Garth Dale Jensen, Sr. Survivors include her daughter, Susan "Suzi" Walker (Ken); two sons, Michael Jensen and Garth Dale Jensen, Jr. (Cathy); six grandchildren, Christopher Jensen, David Walker (Kate), Nicole Spearman (Daniel), Lindsay Walker, Catey Jensen and Garth Jensen III; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Wood and Isabella Wood. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Monday, April 21, 2014 at Jefferson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Charles Mozley and Rev. Michael Carver officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens. Jefferson Memorial East directing the services. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Christian Counseling Service at P.O. box 290 Locus Fork, AL 35097, or Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church.
