Alice Varner Price McGIll Wright, age 87 of Rome, Georgia, formerly of Birmingham, Alabama, went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 15, 2022 after a long illness. This date was also the birthday of her late husband, Albert McGill, and their wedding anniversary.
Alice was born in the Huffman Community of Birmingham Alabama in 1935, the fifth of seven children and lived in Birmingham most of her life. She was a lyric soprano and enjoyed singing in church choirs for 70 years. Alice attended the University of Alabama where she performed in musicals & operettas. She was a homemaker and later worked in sales for the American Automobile Association. She enjoyed playing softball, swimming dancing, and cheering for the Crimson Tide. Alice was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and an involved patriot. She enjoyed history and travel and was thrilled to visit the Holy Land in 2012.
Alice committed her life to Christ at a young age. “In town, in church” was her parents’ motto. She grew up going to Huffman Methodist Church and later joined McElwain Baptist which she attended for 55 years. At McElwain Baptist, she sang in the choir, directed childrens’ choirs, taught Sunday School, and served in outreach. She later joined First Baptist of Rome, Georgia when she moved to be close to her daughter.
Alice was predeceased by her husband and the father of her children, Albert L. McGill, husband J.C. Wright; her parents John M. & Ernesta Castleman Price; her sisters, Lucy Acree, Gloria Sutherland Wood, and Meredith Vickers; and a brother David M. Price.
Alice is survived by her daughter Elizabeth McGill-McDaniel (Scott) of Rome, Georgia, son John Wesley McGill (Betty) of Foley Alabama; grandchildren James Andrew Scott McDaniel and Joseph Castleman McDaniel of Rome, Sally Anne McGIll of Robertsdale, Alabama, and Daniel Wesley McGill (Danielle) of Muncie, Indiana; and great grandchildren, Alice, Jeremiah, Lucas and Myles. She is survived by her brothers, John C. Price of Remlap, Alabama, and Benjamin N. Price (Judy) of Charlotte, North Carolina; and many loving nephews, nieces, and other family members. Alice is also survived by her beloved poodle, Duke.
A celebration of her life and faith will be held on Tuesday December 27, 2022 at Hope Community Church – formerly McElwain Baptist Church, 4445 Montevallo Road in Birmingham, Alabama. Visitation will start at 11 a.m. CST, with the services at 12. Burial will follow in Jefferson Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, favorite charities that honor her Christian commitment and patriotism are designated. Donations may be made to Samaritan’s Purse (samaritanspurse.org), Alliance Defending Freedom (adflegal.org), or Paralyzed Veteran of America (pva.org).
