A. Karen "Katie" Cofield Street, age 74, of Birmingham, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 3, 2012. She was raised in Gadsden and graduated from Gadsden High School in 1955. She was a cheerleader, class favorite and homecoming court maiden. After graduation, she married Charles Richard Street, Sr. They moved to Tuscaloosa where he attended The University of Alabama and graduated in 1959. While in Tuscaloosa their first two children were born. They then moved to Rome, Georgia where Richard began his accounting career. After three years in Rome, Katie and Richard moved to Birmingham where their third child was born. Birmingham has been home to them since. Katie spent the next season of her life raising their three children. She was an extremely devoted mother, never missing an event in any child's life. She instilled in each of them the confidence that they could do anything they desired to do. When her youngest child entered high school, she went to work at Huffman High School as a bookkeeper. She later worked for Birmingham Toledo for over 20 years. Katie was an avid sports fan. She spent many years supporting little league baseball, Huffman High School baseball, Braves baseball and The University of Alabama football. Katie had many talents which included floral arranging, cooking, sewing, and decorating. She was a meticulous house keeper and fashion expert. Her favorite places on earth were the beach and the lake. Katie and Richard have been active members of Huffman Baptist Church for over 45 years. Katie was preceded in death by her son, Stuart Blake Street, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. LL Cofield, and her sister, Marlene Walden. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Richard Street, her daughter, Sharen Alfano (Jerry) of Atlanta; her son Rich Street (Leesa) of Auburn; her brother, Larry Cofield (Barbara) of Scottsboro; her grandchildren Christen Sparks (Ryan), Jessica Nicholson (Adam), Anna, Kathleen, Gabrielle, Jeri, Sterling; great-grandchildren Mamie, Luke , John Stuart, Aubrey, Jude and Levi. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 from 5 to 7PM at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home. Chapel services will be on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 10am with burial in Jefferson Memorial Gardens East. Rev. Larry Smith will be officiating over the services. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Huffman Baptist Church or your favorite charity. Jefferson Memorial Trussville directing.
