Mary Gilmer

Mary Hays Gilmer, age 90, of Birmingham, passed away Friday, September 14, 2012 at St. Martin's in the Pines. Ms. Gilmer was a graduate of Woodlawn High School, attended Birmingham-Southern College, and received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Alabama. She was a 25-year veteran of the Tuscaloosa County and Jefferson County School systems, where she last taught 4th grade at Mt. Olive Elementary. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Kay Burch; granddaughter, Lucy Burch; father, Dr. John H. Hays and mother, Nancy Kathleen McKarty Hays; aunt, Lucille McKinzie; sister, Nancy Hays Murry; and great niece Kathy Bedsole. She is survived by her niece, Kay Bedsole (Dr. Anthony); her great niece, Susan Harris (Ty); great-great nieces Sally and Emma Grace Harris; cousin, Jack Shelton (Martha); cousin, Steven Shelton; and grandson, Benjamin Burch. A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville with Dr. Jack Shelton officiating. Jefferson Memorial Trussville directing.
