Martha Whetstone Gambrell was born March 26, 1927 in Birmingham, Alabama to L.A. and Kathleen Meadow Whetstone. She was a graduate of Woodlawn High School in 1944 and The University of Alabama in 1948 where she was a member and President of Delta Zeta Sorority. A lifetime member of East Lake United Methodist Church, she was an active participant and leader in numerous ministries of the church including the UMW, Sunday School, Youth Department, Alter Guild, Drama, and Congregational Care. She was a director at Camp Winnataska for many years and a Girl Scout Troop Leader. She was a long time member and past president of the Elgithan Literary Club. Martha was a gifted artist- a gift she generously shared with family, church, friends, and community. Reaching out and being of service to others was a joy in her life. She taught at Lewisburg and Fultondale Elementary Schools, retiring in 1954 to be a full time homemaker and mother. She is survived by her husband Charley, son Charles J. "Jack" Gambrell, and daughter-in-law Louise Gambrell, daughter Donna Lushington and son-in-law Alex Lushinton, Jr., grandchildren Russ (wife, Lauren) and Vaughn Gambrell, Alex III, and Martha Anna Lushington, brother Dr. Jack M. Whetstone and sister-in-law Mary Whetstone, nephews Dean Gambrell and his wife Ellen, Robert Gambrell, Jr., and Neal Gambrell. The will be a graveside service at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East, 1591 Gadsden Hwy Birmingham at 2pm. Reverend Sally Alloca officiating. Immediately following will be a visitation from 3pm and memorial service at 4pm at East Lake United Methodist Church, 7753 1st Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35206. The family is so grateful to the management, staff, and employees of Pine Valley Retirement Community for the sincere love and care given to Martha, and also to Amedysis Hospice for their kind and wonderful support.
