John Roy McLaurin Shannon Jr., 101, of Birmingham and recently of Montgomery, went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on February 18, 2020. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Minnie Catheren Cook Shannon; his son, Samuel Wayne Shannon; his parents, John Roy and Ruby Harper Shannon Sr., and his sisters, Mary Ann McWaters (Wayne) and Joyce Mitchell (Charles). He is survived by his brother, Dr. Harper Shannon (Elsie) and his sons; J. Harold Shannon (Gloria), Ralph E. Shannon (Janet) and Roy H. Shannon (Mary); six grandchildren, Troy McLauren Shannon, Eric Todd Shannon, Kellie Shannon Day (Jamie), Susan Shannon Dove, James Patrick Shannon (Jenny), Amy Catheren Cook (Matthew); four great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and their children. John was a life-long member of Huffman Baptist Church where he was a Life Deacon, a former Trustee and a long time Sunday School Superintendent. He was very proud to be a WWII veteran having served as a Staff Sargent for nearly two years in Reykjavik, Iceland with the U.S. Army. He was a faithful husband, an exemplary father, a loving “Pepaw” to his grandchildren and a dear “Uncle John” to his nieces and nephews. He is dearly and sorely missed. A funeral service and internment will be held at Jefferson Memorial, Trussville, on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 2pm. visitation will be an hour prior to services. Burial will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project or a charity of your choice.
