Coach James A. Currier "Jimmy", age 72, of Pinson, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2011. Coach Currier was born in Birmingham, February 16, 1939. He was preceded in death by his parents Ray L. Currier and Evelyn Taylor Currier and his brother Ray Eugene Currier. Coach Currier spent nearly 5 decades teaching and coaching High School football, basketball, and track. His experience included stints at Calera, Jones Valley, Banks, Jacksonville, Pinson Valley, and Springville High Schools. After retiring from the educational system, Coach Currier pursued a very successful career in business before returning to the Birmingham School System. Here he continued to teach and coach students from Hayes and Woodlawn High School until health problems forced him to retire March 1, 2011. He received his education from the University of Alabama, Samford University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he earned his BS in Education and Science; Masters Degrees in Biology and Math; EdS in Superintendency and Administration; he was to receive his doctoral degree this fall in Administration. During his illustrious career, Coach Currier has received many athletic and academic accolades that he and his family are very proud of, such as Who's Who in American Education, Medal of Distinction Honoring Alabama Teachers, and memberships in many honorary and professional organizations. Coach Currier was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife who was his best friend and cheerleader for over 50 years, UnaKing Conway Currier. They have two children T. Dwayne (Jill) Currier of Trussville, Kevyn B. (Mary) Currier of Athens, Grandchildren, Martin, Ethan, Brettlyn, and Keenon Currier. Survived by his sisters, Grace Webster of Marietta, GA; Barbara (David) Sanders of McCalla; brother, Kenneth (Chinae) Currier, Roanoke, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Coach Currier had a tremendous impact on countless numbers of students throughout his career. It has been said, "Jimmy has never met a stranger." He will be dearly missed by all. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints. The visitation will be held at the Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville, Alabama, Tuesday July 19, 2011 from 5:00 till 7:00pm. Funeral services will be conducted at The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in Bessemer, Alabama, on Wednesday, July 20, at 1pm at The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints in Bessemer, Alabama. Located at 831 Briarwood Rd, Bessemer, AL 35022, on Wednesday July 20, 2011 at 1:00pm. The burial will be at the Salem Cemetery in Calera, Alabama. Jefferson Memorial Trussville directing.
