Coy Shaw was born on September 12, 1925 to William and Estelle Shaw. He lived a long, full life to age 91 when he suffered his most recent heart attack on March 2, 2017. Coy was a proud World War II veteran who served on the battleship U.S.S. New York. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the war, he went to Barber School and worked at Ellenburg's Barber Shop across from the Howard College Campus in East Lake. He later became the owner and worked there for over 50 years. He served the church faithfully and was a member of North Gardendale Baptist Church when he died. Coy was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna. He is survived by his daughter, Evelyn; his wife, Ovell, and her loving and accepting family who blessed his life these last 13 years: Benny (Marilyn) Swafford, Steve (Carla) Swafford, Patsy O'dell, Rita Dunaway, Kim (Chris) O'Rear, 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 5 at 2:30pm at Jefferson Memorial in Trussville, with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
