Carl Edward Baker died on September 25, 2019, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Born on December 8, 1933 in North Alabama, Carl was one of eight children to Olsen and Maggie Baker. Carl grew up in Tennessee and had a deep passion for traditional bluegrass music, Tennessee Vols football, and Lady Vols basketball. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. After leaving the Army, Carl worked for B. F. Goodrich tire company for over thirty-five years. He married Robbie Berry on October 13, 1972. Robbie brought a young son to the marriage, Marcus, whom Carl adopted, and they had a second child, Kimberly. Carl was fortunate to retire at a relatively young age and was dedicated to his wife, children, jogging, Vols sports, and bluegrass music (sometimes in that order). Robbie died in 2007, just a short time before the birth of his granddaughters, Carys and Mairwen. With their arrival, everything else moved to the side for Carl, and they became his number one preoccupation. His unwavering devotion to them was evident to anyone who talked to him. They, along with everyone else, will miss him dearly. Carl was preceded in death by his wife Robbie Baker, and his siblings Maxine Corder, Ernest Baker, and Leona Bordonaro. He is survived by his son Marcus Baker, daughter Kimberly Baker (spouse Gareth Jones), and siblings Dorothy Moses, Charlie Baker, Frank Baker, and Margaret Harmon. In lieu of flowers the family would like to request donations be made to American Cancer Society at cancer.org.
